In the back streets of District VII lies Szimpla Kert Mozi. Look for the pale yellow sign and find your way into the bar. The ‘lobby’ is laid out like a living room from the 1950’s with old chairs and radios and is possibly one of the oddest entrances to a bar I’ve ever seen. Especially since through the next door is a bar with nothing in common with the fifties at all and an area that seems so big in comparison to the tiny maze you just came from.
These ‘rom kocsma’ bars seem to have been carved from the remains of Budapest and retain their warehouse feel. The ‘kert’ part refers to the outdoor space at the back, and the mozi to the cinema screen, which is rarely showing anything. There must have been some coordination and skill involved in getting as many different types of furniture and lighting fixtures into the same place but ‘haphazard’ is still the word that springs to mind.
Open throughout the year and with a drinking-up time of about 4am, this Rom Kocsma is Budapest through and through.
